Dear readers,
Today I worked on the 50/50 cm painting that I worked on last Friday. Completely painting it over. Am not yet sure if this one is here to stay, but I keep on painting, and learning heaps in the meanwhile.
At this moment Nicholas Wilton has a free series of ‘pre-lessons’ that you can subscribe to (see his website nicholaswilton.com). In the fifth video he talks about painting inside and outside the painting. Very interesting, check it out! He talks about how you not only paint within the borders of the canvas, but also show parts of shapes that ‘live’ outside the canvas too. For instance: on my painting those black shapes are actually parts of bigger shapes that run of the canvas. Now in this one it is all quite square. And I already used this principle unconsciously. But it is nice to have a look at his video, to see what an impact it makes.
Okay, enough for today!
Keep on painting ;-)
Simone
ps: below you see a photo of yesterday’s and today’s paintings together. They are sort of family: it is nice to see all those pink next to each other!

I think so. I recommend them, it is always nice to hear him talk. He maybe has a more ‘compositional’ angle, not only ‘intuitive’, but I like what he has to tell. He has some interesting things about transparency vs opacity, and complexity vs simplicity. It has all to do with contrast/differences. Stuff you can do intuitively, but it is nice to have somebody talk about it.
Another person whose ideas I like is Nancy Willis. She is a completely wild painter who throws around paint. She has also a four part video series (I think they will be gone 19 januari) – as preparation for a course she gives. I haven’t watched them yet, so can’t tell you if they are good. But I always like her wild and abstract expressionist approach!
Bye!
Simone, I love what has emerged from your painting over Friday’s piece and taking it somewhere new. And the two ‘family’ paintings together look outstanding! Thanks for sharing the Nicholas Wilton ‘stuff.’ Would you recommend the pre-lessons? Is it still possible to sign up for them?
