Daily Painting: Thinking about composition

Daily painting

Dear reader,

Today I made another collage on postcard size. I think this one is going to make it into my online course too.

In my online course, I include a small video in which I analyze the composition. Interesting stuff! I don’t THINK about composition too much when I make the collage, but thinking afterward is worthwhile. What you learn afterward adds to your experience, and when you are making another collage, this experience subconsciously helps you to take action and just DO something.

I’m not sure if I’m clear. But the thing I want to say is: there is nothing wrong with thinking about your compositon. But only afterward.

Bye!

Simone, I take great heart from your after-versus-before approach to composition. No wonder you paint so freely, and with such terrific results. In today’s painting, I am fascinated by that central horizontal band, with its mostly-but-not-entirely straight bottom edge and its rough uneven upper edge.

Busy day ahead. Off I go!

Thanks for your sweet words, Dotty! It’s only recently that I realized this. And I’m not even sure if it is true. But I feel it this way. That subconsciously you know how you want your composition, and this ‘knowing’ grows by practicing often, and by analyzing afterward if you feel like it.
Maybe you don’t even need to verbalize it afterward. Learning can take place subconsciously. What do you think, as a learning specialist?
