Today I worked small again, about 17/25 cm , 7/10″, on paper.
What I liked today is working with the grey. I like to use huge contrasts (black/white), but the grey gives a beautiful ‘mid-tone’ (or in-between-value). And the second thing is that such a neutral colour gives more space to the bright colours. Actually: the colours are not that bright, because I added a glaze of Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold, so the colours look quite ‘earthy’.
This piece is quite busy, but I leave it like this.

1. No: I used greys straight out of the bottle. Maybe a good idea to do that differently, but: as you can see I ‘glazed’ over some of the grays with the Nickel Azo Gold too, so it matches with the rest of it.
2. Yes ;-)
3. I gessood it first. I think the ‘touch’ comes from the tool that I use to put white paint and gesso on it: it is a ‘foam roller’ from the hardware store, the one you use for housepaint. I guess the foam leaves a tiny pattern on it.
Also I use that same foam roller to roll the white paint on top of it, and that strengthen that texture-effect, I think.

• wallpaper again?
• do you put gesso on first, or just dive right in? (this paper appears to have lovely ‘tooth’
I like the grays and how they work in this painting. I’ve been noticing neutrals recently.
