Kunst

Dear readers,

Today I have started with making an inventarization of all my paintings of the last months (thinking about the exposition in the beginning of March). It became clear to me that I have lots and lots of 20/20 cm paintings. And 7 or so 100/100 paintings. So I hope to make some paintings ‘in between’ the upcoming weeks.

Today I started doing that with a 30/30 canvas (4 cm deep). I bought one to try out, and I actually like it. I like working on paper too: it is funny to see how different substrates evoke different kind of art.

Bye!

Simone

Simone, thanks for your discussion of playing with crayons. You use them to such terrific and appealing effect to do exactly what you enumerated—to add shapes, to add contrast, to create wild marks, to add small details, and to add tone-on-tone. How do you get such thick bold lines? Are you using Neocolor II here—the little skinny crayons??

Yes, I use Neocolor II, but I use them with a hairdryer… ;-). This way they warm up, and they sort of melt a bit. Then they smear (?) out a little bit. Almost too much.
I sometimes want to make a thinner line – and that is more difficult with the crayons. Do you have suggestions for ‘thinner line-makers’? That have this ‘rough’ feel?

Thanks Dotty, I am glad too!
I was wandering what you mean bye: ‘I’m wondering what you might do differently from what I do’. It is an interesting question. How do I use crayons?
I think I like to add some bold shapes with that (for instances here with the circles), to add contrast (white/black, black/white), to create some ‘wild marks’, for instance like a kind of wild writing (see painting of 11 januari, not so much in this painting). Or other scratches. And to add small details (for instance the small dots on the upper left corner, or the blue pattern on the right under). Or to create tone-on-tone effects (for instance: the pink half-circle on the mid right (and the orange in the same figure)….

    Thanks for asking!
Nice that you ask me: this way I had to think it out for myself!

I have to say again how glad I am to have you back after your long holiday! So wonderful to see your new art! I (still, again) wish I could hang out with you and watch you work—you get such dramatic impact from your use of crayons, and I’m wondering what you might do differently from what I do!!! As ever, I love the bright colors, the composition, the contrasts, the playfulness, the joy, the free spirit.
