Dear readers,
Today I worked further on the bigger canvas. Eventhough I have lots of Jane Davies-work to do, I also want to work on my ‘own stuff’ since I ‘have to’ finish some before the 1st of november.
Today, I have been inspired by Nancy Hillis – an expressionist painter, who stresses not to think while painting, purely paint from your body, stay in the gesture, don’t construct the composition, but let it happen. I recognize the feeling when I paint like that, I feel completely free, completely playful, I just let the painting paint itself, and let it go in the direction where it wants.
And then I get out of that mode, and I am starting to think: ‘hmm, what about this shape. No, it is a bit too rectangular. Hmm: what if I paint it over with white? Hmm, let’s add some marks here to see if that fits’. I start to feel more and more constricted. And then I find my way out again.
I am wondering: is learning and thinking about all kinds of things (colour schemes, composition, variety, sameness, lines, value) getting in the way of painting freely and expressionistically (is that a word?) – which in my opinion gives the most interesting results.
Or do you take your ‘knowledge’ in your backpack, and does it play a role in the background, while playing with paint.
At least: today I painted with lots of joy.
Another question: I want to submit a few paintings for a possible show in march. De deadline is 1 november. Should I ‘hurry’ to get things done? Or should I not mind the agenda, just paint and see if I am ready in time?
In this painting I added a new important colour: green gold. Goes beautiful with the turquoise and the burnt sienna.
bye!
Simone
ps: and, jut for fun, I added two details.
The other thing is: my website is having a problem. The pictures don’t appear. If you click on the title, you go to the blogpost itself, and there the pictures appears. I hope to solve the problem soon.

I guess we are commenting on each others blogs in ‘real time’ ;-)
Thanks for your comment, and let’s keep trying where all this will bring us!
Simone, my gratitude is ongoing for both your painting and your discussion/questions. I am thinking about precisely the same questions as you as I find my way through JD’s class and as I confront various time pressures in my day to day living. While I remain fully committed to participating actively in the class, I also am eager to return to my self-directed, more expressionistic painting life. I wonder what I’ll discover then?
I’m loving that your ‘pink’ painting now has barely a hint of visible pink!
